At Farther Foundation it is our hope and belief that the opportunities for educational travel that we help provide are tipping point moments in the life of eager and deserving students. Once they have such a unique and powerful experience, their eyes are opened, their aspirations are heightened and they become unwilling to settle for less. Most of our scholarship recipients are high school juniors who travel during the summer between their junior and senior years. As a result of their experience and increased confidence, we see them expanding the range of colleges they are considering, seeking and finding better opportunities that might be further from home or more selective than they were willing to consider before.
Just recently though, I talked with two of our alumni who traveled between their sophomore and junior years – How are they reacting?
I had lunch with Jazmine at her school, UIC College Prep, the other day (though I gave her very little time to eat between my questions). Jazmine spent three weeks last summer on the campus of Princeton University with talented students from around the country learning about government and politics. In an example of how opportunity and success leads to a drive for more, Jazmine is busy raising funds to enable her to participate in a program that will take her to Spain this coming summer. But she is not just doing it for herself, she has encouraged several fellow students to follow the same path. She also let me know that as she begins to think about college, schools including Brown and Stanford are on her list.
I also heard from Nora recently. Nora is now a junior at Benito Juarez High School. Last summer Nora went to Carleton College to participate in a rigorous summer science program. This summer, Nora will be part of a group of 10 students and a faculty member from her high school that will be going to Costa Rica. This is not an opportunity that just fell into her lap. Inspired by her previous experience, Nora was the driving force behind identifying the program and the resources necessary to make this opportunity a reality for herself and her classmates.
We are continually given cause to be proud of our alumni and admire their initiative and talent. We are currently in the midst of considering applications from a new group of students seeking to begin the next phase of their lives today.
