Application deadline is March 31

All month at Farther Foundation, scholarship applications have been rolling in, and our selection committee is getting excited to begin our review. Already we see students who hope to participate in educational travel programs in Spain, Italy, France, Ghana, Costa Rica, Peru and Israel. There are also students applying to summer college programs at Yale and Johns Hopkins.

Educational summer programs that take students away from the familiarity of home and family challenge them to open their eyes and hearts to a world of experiences and opportunities beyond the boundaries of their neighborhoods. New and unique experiences also lead to greater self-confidence and heightened expectations for their future opportunities and successes.

Farther Foundation scholarships are awarded to Chicago area high school students.

The Students:  Eligible students are incoming high school freshman through graduating high school seniors from the Chicago area.  Students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Generally, students have had little or no previous educational travel experience and have met a minimum threshold for academic achievement.  Students are sponsored by an Education Partner, and are actively involved in programs that enhance their regular school curriculum and support the student’s own demonstrated dedication to personal growth.

Education Partners:  Education Partners are schools and organizations that provide students with extra-curricular support (e.g. tutoring, mentoring, internships, extended school day, after-school programming, leadership training, and college preparatory activities).  Students cannot apply for a Farther Foundation grant without the support of an Education Partner to serve as a reference and a partner for the student in the application process.

The Programs: Educational travel opportunities are provided by established operators that lead programs designed to allow students to become immersed in new cultures and experiences, learn and develop skills, serve a community, cultivate leadership potential and attain personal growth. Programs are generally two weeks or longer in duration and can be foreign or domestic. We have an extensive directory of program providers on our website; please visit there to help research programs that are right for you.

The Grants: Grants to support a single student’s participation in a program are available up to a maximum of $4,000.  Scholarships may cover program fees, travel to and from the program location and other related costs such as passport fees, vaccinations, required insurance and essential equipment.

Applications are due by March 31st: Our guidelines and application materials are available online at, or call 708-497-7240 to learn more.

Farther Foundation and the students we serve depend on the tax deductible donations from people like you to make these life changing experiences possible. Visit our website to make a donation online.
