When filling out your college basketball tournament bracket it’s a common mistake to fall too much in love with your hometown or home state college team. The hometown college might have an excellent team, but if you don’t consider all of your options, you could be making the wrong choice.
It’s not so different for a high school student starting to decide where to go to college. There might be some good choices right in town or in state, but the important thing is to determine which school is the best fit for you as a student. What size school are you looking for? What do you want to study? What is the cost and the availability of financial aid? How diverse is the school? What sort of academic support services exist? How is the food, the weather, the social scene? There are hundreds of colleges across the country, and with so many factors to consider in finding the best fit, why confine your search.
Studies have shown that students who travel a bit further away from home for college tend to graduate at a higher rate. Often, the best fit college might be across the country rather than across town. One of the great benefits of participating in a Farther Foundation supported educational travel program during high school is the experience that is gained by being away from home for an extended period of time. The experience raises awareness about opportunities around the country and helps the students and their families become comfortable and confident with being away from home.
What do we see from Farther Foundation students? More than 50% of Farther Foundation students go to college out of state (the national average is 33%). More importantly, more than 90% of Farther Foundation students who enroll in college graduate or remain on track to graduate within four years (graduation rates for similar demographic groups nationally is well under 50%).
The take home lesson in picking your college or filling out your brackets is the same. Consider all of the factors that matter and all of your options and make the smart choice. We hope you are having as much success in your brackets as Farther Foundation students are having in college.
Farther Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization providing scholarships to low-income students to inspire them to reach their highest aspirations through educational travel experiences.
